Kais Genetic testing includes:
Embark: which comes back Clear and negative for curl
Canine Health Check: Provides additional testing which shows Kai has 1 copy of PRA-rcd4 which is physically detected in his eye exams. Our CAER certification and conversation with our Certified Ophthalmologists advises to only breed with Dams with Normal Care results or genetically clear of this mutation.
Further testing and research into Kai’s Mysterious curly coat. As Kai aged his coat became curlier and curlier. This was puzzling to me and anyone I asked. As I knew Kai wasn’t a straight coated dog like both of his genetic panels told me I did some digging and ended up testing his coat with Animal Genetics which not only tests for Curl type one, but also Type 2 curl found in some poodles but primarily Water retrieval dogs. The reason this coat type is a staple of water retrievers is the easy maintenance of a coat that can get wet and not mat like a double curl of a poodle coat. The downfall to this soft luscious coat that I truly love, is that we can’t pair Kai with another C2 carrier because the hair shaft can become too soft with double copies of the C2 gene. This gene is excellent for pet homes, but we do have restrictions on holding back a C2 puppies for breeding prospects.
Our goal as stud owners is always to provide all the information to the Dam owner, we can create well rounded and healthy puppies that will thrive in life! Kai's intelligence and wonderful temperament along with his gorgeous structure and great Pennhip scores is the reason we offer Kai as a Stud. Kai can produce intense red but some of his puppies will fade since his mother was from non-fading lines but his sire was faded. Kais Coat color change started happening around 16 months of age.
Kai is a our sweet sensitive red bearded boy, he is a joy to be with and has excellent manners when we are out in public. Kai is a gentle and very intuitive dog, he will lock eyes with you and understands commands and needs. He knows very quickly if someone is upset and needs a comfort. He has excellent leash manners and very good recall off leash. Kai definitely catches everyone’s attention when we are out. Kai's puppies have been calm and intelligent. Kai passes his stocky build, gentle temperament and human focus to his offspring. I also notice retrieval, overhead awareness and love for water in his puppies.
